No Looking Back by: Amanda

No Looking Back Author's Note: You'll really want to read the previous 5 parts, ("Cruel Inventions," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Help!" "In the Heat of the Night," and "Big Business,") because this series is confusing enough as it is. And yes, this is told from Dawson's perspective. Also, thoughts, flashbacks, and something to show that a word is being enunciated are in **, so you'll have to figure that one out on your own.

Your heart is not open so I must go

"Dawson! Wait!" Joey yelled as I walked swiftly out of the building. "All I ever do is wait, Joey! That's what I've done for over half my lifetime! But your heart isn't open, so I have to go!"

The spell has been broken?I loved you so

"I don't know why I did it, I think it became a game for me, trying to get you back. But the spell has been broken...I lov*ed* you so. In the past tense, you see."

"What if I open my heart again, Dawson?" she pleaded.

"How do I know you won't hurt me? I know I need to take my own advice, and realize that you made a mistake and that I just need to forget about it, but I can't. Because that mistake cost me the one thing that I could hold on to."

Freedom comes when you learn to let go

"The only way I can get the freedom I deserve is if I let go."

"What if you don't want to let go? Subconsciously, what if your heart doesn't want you to let go?"

Creation comes when you learn to say no

"The only way I can re-create myself is if I say no, Joey. Maybe my heart doesn't want to let go, but I have to," I told her as I began to walk away.

"Dawson!" she yelped, grabbing my arm. "Don't go away from this."

I laughed in spite of her stupidity. "Don't you see, Joey? I don't have any other choice *but* to go away from it. Walk away."

Walk away

I looked back to see her in despair. "You know, Joey? One thing I did learn from my epic romance with you is never let yourself fall for someone when you know the breakup is inevitable. So...I guess you were my lesson I had to learn, and I was the one you had to burn."

You were my lesson I had to learn
I was your fortress you had to burn

"Dawson, why won't you give me another chance?"

"Because pain is a warning that something's wrong, and every time I look at you, I feel a pang in my heart."

Pain is a warning that something's wrong

"And I just pray to God that it won't be long before we can get on with our lives and I can walk away."

I pray to God that it won't be long
Walk away

"Dawson, we can work this out! There's got to be something that we can try!"

"No, there's not! There's nothing left to try, there's no place left to hide!" I exclaimed.

There's nothing left to try
There's no place left to hide

"And the truth is...there is some power in goodbye," I sighed.

There's no greater power than the power of good-bye

"Because your heart isn't open, so I have to go...and whatever spell you put me under has been broken, because I lov*ed* you so," I explained to her, repeating myself.

Your heart is not open so I must go
The spell has been broken?I loved you so

"And you were my lesson I had to learn, and I was that one..."

You were my lesson I had to learn
I was your fortress

"But, Dawson, I *know* there's something left to try!" she urged me to believe.

"No, there's not! There's nothing left to try, there's no place left to hide!" I repeated.

There's nothing left to try
There's no place left to hide

"And not to repeat myself, but there is some power in goodbye," I wanted to end.

There's no greater power than the power of good-bye

"We don't have anything left to lose, though!"

"You're right there, Joey...*I* don't have anymore sleep to lose. And now, there's no more heart to bruise."

There's nothing left to lose
There's no more heart to bruise

"And I have to say goodbye...because that's the power I have right now."

There's no greater power than the power of good-bye

As I began to walk away, I heard Joey whisper to herself, "I can't let him go. I can't." She obviously couldn't, because next thing I knew, she grabbed me and kissed the life out of me. And I, untrue to my word, kissed back willingly.

*I have to learn to say goodbye...I yearn to say goodbye...*

Learn to say goodbye
I yearn to say goodbye

Yeah, I'm really going to leave them there kissing with so many unresolved issues; look for the next part in "One True Thing."
