Afterthoughts

Joey Potter sat up and rubbed her eyes. They were swollen from the night before and they hurt. But not as much as her heart. She didn't mean to hurt him, she just.....had to be honest. Thinking of him made her eyes well up with tears and, with a small sob, she sank back down, thinking back from the time from when Jen died until now...

"Oh my gosh, you guys would never believe who I am meeting!" Dawson Leery exclaimed excitedly. Joey Potter and Pacey Witter sat on the couch in her New York apartment, eagerly talking to their best friend, Dawson, about his upcoming meeting.

"Spielberg?" they said in unison.

"Yes!" Dawson said.

"Congrats, my friend, I always knew you would reel the poor guy in to read your cheesy romance stories! I'm just joking you know, I'm really am proud of you Dawson," Pacey said.

Dawson grinned and mischievously said, "bite me, Pacey!"

Pacey laughed saying, "no can do, Dawson, Joey might get jealous!"

Joey pretended to get mad and swatted Pacey with a pillow. In mock defense, Pacey told his best friend, "see, Dawson? Even the mere thought of it drives her completely insane!" Screaming in laughter, Joey told Dawson that they had to go, she had to settle a score with her boyfriend.

"Okay, Joey. I love you lots!" he told her.

"I love you, too, Dawson," she whispered back. They both knew that it was just a friendly type of love. She loved Pacey. Didn't she?

~Back to the present~

That was one of the best times she had with Pacey. It was the first time she had truly laughed after Jen died. God, she missed Jen. She had hated the blonde when she had first moved to Capeside, but after a while, she couldn't help but like her. After all, Jen had never tried to offend her in any way. Jen had urged Joey to choose her true love, and, for a while, she thought it was Pacey. Sometimes she wondered, "maybe I made a mistake; maybe Pacey was my true love. But if so, why don't I feel the attraction to him that I used to feel?" Joey still remembered when she told Pacey it was over...

"Pacey, I need to t-talk to you..." Joey stammered, barely believing what she was about to do.

"Yeah, Joey, what would you like to say?" Pacey asked, leaning down to kiss her. Reluctantly, she kissed him, knowing it would probably be the last time.

"Let's go sit down on the couch," she said and paused. After they were settled, she began. "Pacey, I love you so much. I want you to know that. I also hope nothing changes besides the fact that what I'm about to say, is really gonna hurt you." Pacey's face fell, for he knew what was coming. Joey rushed her words. "I'm so sorry, I never meant to hurt you or lead you on, I just think that..we aren't meant for each other. Somewhere in my heart, I've always loved.."

“Dawson," Pacey replied bitterly. "Gosh, that guy is always following me, even if I am thousands of miles away, there he is always haunting me."

Joey looked as if she were about to cry. "Pacey don't do this, this is NOT his fault. It's mine," she said, her tears spilling over. Pacey stepped closer, wiped them away, and hugged her.

"I know it's not, I just never take anything easily." He released her, kissed her forehead, and left the apartment. Joey watched the door close and collapsed in sobs.

~Back to the present~

Since then, all she did was lay in her room, only getting up to go to the bathroom. She knew she was starved, but she felt depressed.

At that moment, although she didn't know it, someone was on their way to see her.

"Flight 264, we are now landing in the New York, New York area! Please grab any loose luggage lying around and get ready to exit the plane!"

Dawson Leery grabbed his black suitcase and sat back as they landed at John F. Kennedy Airport. He was on his way to see his best and oldest friend, Joey. Pacey called to tell him that she had broken up with him, and Dawson knew Joey wouldn't be taking it well. He knew she needed him. Right now, Pacey was with Doug and Jack in the Bahamas on a little joy vacation. Dawson sighed. He hoped Joey would still need him as she once did.

Exiting the plane, he saw the tall skyscrapers off in the distance. "A perfect place to film a movie," he said to himself. He grinned. He was here for Joey, not to make a movie, although the idea was appealing. Then he would be closer to Joey all the time. Dawson couldn't lie to himself any longer. He loved Joey with all his heart, all of his existence. He couldn't tell her that, though. It would throw off their whole newly reconstructed friendship, and he couldn't do that again. Dawson looked at the piece of paper with Joey's address written on it, and walked to the subway.

~Back at the apartment~

Bzzt! Joey slowly sat up, her head pounding. Her stomach grumbled and she realized how hungry she was. Groaning, she shuffled over to the intercom to see who wanted to see her today. "Who is it?" she asked politely.

"An old friend," the mysterious person said, although the voice sounded oddly familiar...

Joey gasped. Could it really be him? Wait, no, they were just friends, he was in California, not here. "Okay, hold on, gimme 10 minutes!" she called. As quickly as she could, she splashed cold water on her face and got dressed in jeans and a green shirt. Trying to brush her hair, she pressed the button to open the door so the stranger could come up. Well, Joey Potter, she thought, that was really smart on your part. You don't even know who this is, and you let him in. A knock on the door startled her away from her thoughts. She opened the door and came face to face with Dawson Leery.
