A Smile Like Yours 2

Dr. Barnes entered the waiting room about an hour later, to find Pacey sitting with a boy and two young girls. She couldn't see Jack anywhere. "Sorry to break up the group Pacey, but she's waking up, and I think you should be there when she does." Pacey stood up quickly. "Where's Jack gone?"

"He's gone home to get some things for Andie, since she has to be here tonight." Pacey answered.

"I see, then it's just you then. Are you ready?" She asked in a concerned tone.

Pacey took a deep breath, and nodded. "Ready as I'll ever be." He began to follow the doctor.

"Pace, we'll be right here ok?" Dawson said as they left, and Pacey turned and smiled at his friends. He followed the doctor back to Andie's room. She was lying in the bed, still sleeping.

Pacey sat down beside her, took her hand in his and kissed it, trying to plan what he would say to her. It was still a shock to him that he and Andie had lost a baby. He hadn't even known it existed until it was too late, yet he was overcome with grief about the loss. But, his sadness was only a fraction of what Andie would feel when she awoke.

Suddenly, Andie began to stir, her eyes fluttering as they opened. She blinked, adjusting to the bright light in the room, and looked around.

"Hey, you're awake." Pacey said quietly. Andie turned her head to see him, and smiled slightly.

"Hey, where am I?"

"You're in the hospital, you fainted at school." He said carefully, not wanting to break the news to her just yet. Dr. Barnes stepped forward from behind Pacey, and addressed Andie.

"Hi Andie, I'm Dr. Barnes, I treated you when you came in. There's no need to worry, everything is going to be just fine, I'm just going to keep you in overnight for observation." She explained.

"But what happened, why did I faint." Andie asked. Pacey and Dr. Barnes exchanged a look, and she nodded to him to tell Andie. Pacey turned back to his girlfriend and took a deep breath, preparing himself for what he now had to tell her.

He hesitated for a moment trying to find the right way to say this, then took Andie's hand as a way of supporting himself and her. "You know how you said to me that PMS had you down today?" he asked. Andie nodded, confused. "Well, it wasn't your period that made you sick, you we're having a miscarriage." He said quietly, tears brimming in his eyes.

Andie gasped, then made a choking noise as she began to cry. "What! What do you mean I had a miscarriage, I wasn't pregnant." She cried. Dr. Barnes, sensing Pacey's inability to continue took over explanations.

"I'm afraid you were Andie, no more than 4 weeks I'm sure. Unfortunately, your pregnancy was one of the many that don't work out. We don't know why it happens, there is no real common factor that causes it." Andie nodded, not really listening, still in shock. Pacey sat helplessly beside her, kissing her hand, all the while trying to control his own tears.

"So, is everything else ok. I mean, I can still have children right?" Andie asked through her tears.

Dr. Barnes nodded, giving both the teens a sympathetic look. "I'll get someone to take you to your room soon, until then I want you to just rest. Your body has suffered a huge trauma today, it needs time to recuperate." She moved toward the door. "I'll leave you two alone for now." She said before leaving.

Pacey and Andie were left alone, in their sad silence. Finally Pacey spoke, "I'm so sorry Andie, I wish there were more I could say." He said as he hugged her close. She threw her arms around his neck and sobbed loudly into his shoulder.

"Shhh, Andie, it's going to be okay. I'm here for you, I promise." He crooned as he rocked her in his arms and allowed her to cry tears for the child she would never know; their child who would never be.

Jack opened the door for Pacey and Andie, then returned to the car to grab her overnight bag from the car. Pacey helped Andie up the stairs, and got her settled into bed. Physically, she was fine, just very tired, probably due to the lack of sleep she'd had the night before. Pacey had gained permission to stay at the hospital with her, and they had lay together all night, each taking comfort in the presence of each other. It had made their sadness a little easier to bear.

"Well my love, can I get you anything?" He asked, taking a seat next to her on the bed.

Andie made herself comfortable against the pillows and shook her head. "No, just stay here with me until I fall asleep." She requested.

"Of course." He said, and lay down next to her.

They lay silent for about 15 minutes, after which time Pacey assumed she was asleep.

"Pacey?" she asked, startling him.

"Yeah?' He asked as brushed her hair from her forehead.

"What would we have done if I hadn't had a miscarriage. Would you have been happy?" she asked quietly.

Pacey lay in quiet contemplation for a moment before answering. It was a question that, had she asked him a few days ago, would have head a different answer. But now that he had realized the grief that losing a child could cause, his attitude had changed.

"The day we find out that you are carrying our baby, will be the day my life is complete." Pacey said finally. Andie rolled over to face him, her eyes brimming with tears.

"You mean that? You would have loved this baby if it had lived."

Pacey placed a hand against her face, moving a strand of hair from her eyes. "The only person in this world I would have loved more would have been you." Andie smiled sadly then kissed him gently.

"Thank you." She said quietly.

5 Years Later...

Pacey rubbed his eyes, and took another sip of his coffee, hoping that the caffeine would help keep him awake. He turned his concentration back to the computer screen, intent on finishing the last few paragraphs of his research paper before the sun rose.

"Hey, you're still awake?" asked a voice from behind him. He turned to see Andie standing in the door from their bedroom. "It's almost 2 am." She said as she came over and knelt beside him. He gave her a quick kiss.

"I'm almost done. I took a break about an hour ago to tend to his Royal Highness, so that delayed me a little." He explained, indicating their three-month-old son who was sleeping in a carrier on Pacey's chest. Andie reached down and placed a loving hand on her baby's head.

"You should have woken me, I would have taken him so you could finish working."

"It's ok, I like having him here with me while I work. Kinda helps me remember what I'm doing all this for." Pacey looked at her and smiled, "Besides, you were so peaceful I didn't want to wake you."

Andie smiled at Pacey, and kissed him deeply, "I love you." She said as they broke away.

"And I love you too." He looked down at his son. "Both of you." He said placing a gentle kiss on the infant's head.

She reached down and took the baby from him. "Here, I'll put him in his crib, let you finish up." She hugged her son close and toward the bedroom, "C'mon sweetie, let's give daddy a break."

Pacey sat watching her retreat and smiled. Who would have guessed that he would one day be a father. In his early years, definitely not him, and no one else he knew. Yet, when he found out about Andie's miscarriage, it made him realize that he would have loved that baby more than anything and that he wanted to be a father.

When they had told their families that Andie was pregnant, they had been shocked, startled at this unplanned new arrival. They claimed that Pacey and Andie were too young, that it was too soon, but the young couple was very firm in their decision to keep the baby. Joey, Dawson, Jen and Jack had understood why, even if their families hadn't.

Though Pacey and Andie had acted shocked and surprised at the news, in truth the baby had been planned. They had been planning for him since the day they lost their first baby. And now Pacey couldn't imagine his life without either of them. Pacey, Andie and Aden were the perfect family.

Pacey stood up from his chair and wandered over toward the bedroom, his work momentarily forgotten. Andie was standing by Aden's crib, happily watching him sleep. Pacey came up behind her and placed his arms around her waist.

"He's so perfect." Andie sighed contentedly as she leaned against Pacey.

"I know." Said Pacey, "But you know what I like best?" Andie looked at him curiously. "He's got a smile like yours."
