Best Friends Again…And Possibly More Part One

(Dawson’s Room)

After dinner, Dawson walked into his room. He went straight to his collection of videos in the cabinet under this TV. He looked at the list he created for his videos. He flipped the pages over again, deciding on a feature for Tonight’s movie. “No,” he said after each one. He closed the cabinet and looked around. He grabs his coat and heads for the video store.

(Screenplay Video, Pacey watching “Home Improvement.” Dawson walks in.)

“Hey man, what are you doing here? It’s your night off.” Pacey says his eyes glued to the TV.

Dawson walks over to the counter. “I need to rent something. I have looked through every single one of the movies I own. Can you believe it! None of them is even appealing at the moment. Even ‘E.T!’”

“You need something else, the Speliberg effect is wearing off if you aren’t careful. Here, it’s a new release.” Pacey says as he slides down a tape for him. Dawson looks at the title. ‘Sliding Doors.’

“This doesn’t look that appealing, Pacey. Anything else, you know dramatic, romantic, or even an action-packed thriller. Anything new?”

His friend cocks his head and looks over to the new release’s section and grabs the video handing it to Dawson. ‘The X-Files.’ “How about this. It’s mysterious, action-packed, and even a little romantic in a scientific way. Saw it with Andie last week, excellent.”

Dawson looks over at Pacey, slightly envious. Pacey’s relationship with Andie was certainly going well. They got along nicely and genuinely liked each other; their trading insults were funny to watch. She certainly put him in his place many times. However, Dawson’s relationship with Joey was left uncertain. After the major cramming at Chris Wolf’s house, he’d agreed to give her the space she needed. She even asked him the day they returned to take the test that didn’t happen, if they could be friends again. He hadn’t given her an answer. She seemed a little sad when he didn’t say ‘yes’ to it and it bothered him.

“Okay, Pacey thanks, I’ll give it a fair shot. Much appreciated.”

As Dawson opened the door to leave, Pacey said. “Watching alone again, I see.”

His friend turns around, his face glum. “Yeah, see you tomorrow.”

“Bye.”

Dawson climbed on his bike and pedals home.

(Dawson’s House 10 minutes later)

Dawson walks toward the stairway, and stops. He looks over at the phone and thinks to himself. I wonder if Joey would come over if I asked her? She wants to be friends again. Movie night would be a starting point to be best friends again…or more, Dawson said to himself.

(Same night around 6pm, Joey at home sitting on her bed looking out of her window, sketching a picture of the creek)

Joey slowly moved her pencil over her sketchpad, lightly creating an outline of the creek, her dock and the water the streamed by her house. She looked through the window and watched the setting sun. It was beautiful. A pink haze covered the sky, and the sun had turned to a dark yellow. (phone rings).

“Joey, can you get that, I’m giving Alexander a bath.” Bessie yelled from the bathroom.

Joey rolled her eyes and said testily. “Fine.” She walks over and picks up the phone.

“Hello.”

“Jo?” Dawson says into the receiver.

She makes a small smile. “Hi, Dawson what’s up?” She was happy he called. It had been a few days since the day they crammed at Chris’s house. And since yesterday, when she got half the money from him winning the contest at the Boston Film Festival. She didn’t lie to him that day, when she said her feelings didn’t change for him.

She did love him, so much. She just wanted to show that she could contribute to the world something, separately. As much as she liked being known as Dawson’s best friend, Dawson’s girlfriend, she wanted something else. Something that defined her, a talent, like Dawson with his filmmaking.

“Jo, I was wondering, ah, you could say no if you want to. This is totally optional. You want to come over and watch a movie?” Dawson waiting on the phone expectantly.

Joey’s eyes lit up. He did want to be friends again, she thought happily. “Sure, I’d like that, Dawson. I’ll be over in about 15 minutes, okay?”

“Really?” He replied incredulously. He was surprised that she’d accepted. “That’s great, I’ll get everything set up. See you then.”

“Okay, bye.” Joey said and hung up. Joey walks into the bathroom. Alexander was splashing water at his mother, and laughing. “Hey, Bessie. I’m going over to Dawson’s. So, I’ll be home around 9:30pm or 10:00pm.”

Bessie looks up and asked curiously. “Is everything okay between you two?”

Joey nodded. “Things are to be expected, Bess. Things are a little tense. See ya later.”

(Screenplay Video. Andie walks in.)

Pacey smiles as she approaches the counter. “And what can I do for you, little miss?”

Andie smiled in turn. “Actually, I’m looking for someone. He’s probably about 6 ft tall, brown hair. And is prone to turning anything he says into something with a sexual overtone. He’s supposed to be my date tonight for movies at my house, but he’s late.”

“Ah, if he doesn’t show up, I’ll go with you.” He says walking around the counter and places his arm around her shoulders. “Actually, he’ll be out in about 10 minutes, his replacement should be here. You want to wait around for him?”

She rolls her eyes at him. “I guess I’ll have to.”

Shortly a tall man in his thirties shows up with a Screenplay video vest on. “Okay, Witter, I’m here. You can leave.”

“Excellent,” replies Pacey, grabbing his coat from behind the counter, and took a video he was renting with him. “Let’s go.”

“It’s about time, Pacey.” Andie says walking with him as they exited the Video Store.

(Joey reaching Dawson’s dock)

Joey pulled into Dawson’s dock and stepped out of her rowboat. She then ties her boat to the dock and walks toward the ladder and climbs up. She looks through his window, Dawson isn’t there yet, so she steps inside.

There is a bowl of Doritos and a bag of Oreos on his bed. She sits on his bed and slips off her coat. Joey lets her eyes wander around his bedroom, and smiles. Ever the Speliberg fan. He had these posters up forever, ‘E.T’, and ‘Hook’ and tons more. She remembered helping him hang them. She glances at the posters for ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ and ‘Amistad’. Dawson took her to see those movies last month. While walking home, they had fun analyzing them, she sighed remembering how in love they were.

Dawson walks into the room, holding two sodas. “Hey, Jo.”

Joey looks up. “Hi.”

Silence for a moment as Dawson gives the soda to Joey.

“So what movie do you have for tonight’s feature? A Speliberg film, perhaps?” Joey asks.

Dawson goes to his VCR and places the tape inside. “No, no Speliberg tonight. I wasn’t in the mood. I haven’t been for a little while now.” Another silence settles between them and he quickly continues making a small laugh. “But don’t worry I have no doubt I’ll be watching them, sometime. You can’t stay away from the best director of all time for too long.”

Joey grins in turn. “A world without Speliberg is unimaginable. What movie did you pick out?”

“I rented ‘The X-files movie.’ Pacey says it’s good. But we’ll see, won’t we?” Dawson says as he walks over his bed. He hesitates for a moment, then lies down sliding the Oreos and Doritos between them. Joey takes her place sitting up on her side. Dawson takes the VCR remote and hits ‘play’.

(Andie’s house half hour later)

Andie and Pacey sat curled up on the couch watching ‘Sliding Doors’, starring Gwenyth Paltrow. The movie was about one woman’s changing of experiences as a result of either missing or getting on the morning train. The scene they were watching was when the self that had gotten on the morning train arrives home to find her boyfriend in bed with someone else.

Andie sat up immediately and looked at Pacey who was up until that point quite comfortable until she moved. “Can you believe that. What a cheating scum! This only proves my point that men only have one thing on their minds. That’s it. They want ‘their cake and eat it two’ with women. Can’t get it enough with one, have two!”

Pacey smiles. “Andie, you know these movies are hogwash. If a woman doesn’t know her man is fooling around, she’s missing the signs. Come on, he says he’s going to the library. What type of lame excuse is that!”

Andie slides away from him. “So you’re saying it’s her fault for him fooling around. You are beyond immature. There is no excuse for his behavior!”

“I completely agree. No excuse. Just proving a point. If you ask any relationship counselor, they will bring that up.” He extends his hand. “Now come over here and let’s finish the movie, okay?”

Andie slides back sitting close to them and grins. “Fine, but I’ll be on the lookout for the signs, Witter. So, watch yourself!”

(Dawson’s Room 9:30pm)

Dawson and Joey’s eyes were glued to the TV as their hands reached for the Doritos, as they watched the last 15 minutes of the movie. The scene was Mulder had just discovered Scully encased in a pod with a tube down her throat. Mulder gets a weapon and throws it against the pod, trying to open it. Water rushes out and Mulder takes the tube from Scully’s mouth and he takes the needle and gives her the shot of the antidote. He then lays her on the ground, and proceeds to administer CPR. Scully replies after breathing on her own. ‘Got you this time, Mulder.’

Quickly Mulder and Scully move through the tunnels and eventually get out through the snow and lay there, exhausted. Suddenly, the large space ship comes up from beneath the snow. Mulder watches in amazement as it flies up to space. He says to Scully, ‘look Scully’, but she is unconscious.

The following day, Scully is a room with FBI officials discussing her report. They clearly don’t believe anything she and Mulder had experienced. And she left them with a small bottle containing the bee that had stung and given her that virus. A note saying ‘The X-files have been reopened.’

Dawson hits the ‘stop’ and then ‘rewind’. “Wow, talk about action-packed thriller.” He looks over at Joey. “What did you think?”

Joey narrowed her eyes and took another clip from the bowl. “Definitely watchable, kept me on the edge. Could you imagine the highest- ranking officers in the FBI keeping this thing covered up!”

“Yep, and think about it, Jo, the virus is simply transmitted through the bee sting. This could have destroyed all mankind. I don’t know why we never watched this show, but we should definitely start.” He says then takes a sip of his soda.

“We?” Joey asks softly.

Dawson turns quickly. “Well, I mean if you want if you’re not busy or anything, we could watch it. I hear they have the reruns at 9pm every night. But if you don’t want to--” Joey interrupted him. “Sure, I’d really like to watch it more of this. We never used to watch anything sci-fi except ‘E.T.’” Dawson looks to the TV and says casually. “Okay, instead of a movie every night, we’ll watch the X-files, and movies on Saturday nights then. Sound good?”

Joey slides her coat on and heads of the window. “Sounds good.” She turns to face him. “I had a really nice time tonight, Dawson. Thanks.”

Dawson smiles at her and stands up putting the tape in the box.

“No problem, Jo. Anytime, you know that.”

“See ya at school, then. Bye.” And with that she climbs down the ladder, walks down the dock.

Dawson looks from the window. Tonight had been a lot of fun. He’d forgotten all about their breakup, and just hung out with Joey, his best friend Joey. They analyzed about movies just the same. He was surprised at how easy it was to be friends with her, a little ackward but that was to be expected. But he was still in love with her, and still hopeful that they could get back what they had.

Okay, here it is the Part 1 in the series. What do you think? Like it? Please send all comments and/or complaints to me.Thanks.
